What is the Pomodoro Technique?

The Pomodoro Technique is a time management method created by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s. It is named after the tomato-shaped kitchen timer he used (pomodoro is Italian for tomato). The method is simple.

  1. Pick one task.
  2. Work on only that task for 25 minutes.
  3. Take a 5 minute break.
  4. After four rounds, take a longer break of 15 to 30 minutes.

Frequently asked questions

Can I play music while I focus?

Yes. Pick one of the focus-music playlists (jazz, café, classical, ocean and more). Music plays only during focus time, pauses when a break starts and continues at the next focus session. It is off by default.

Can I change the focus and break lengths?

Pick a 25- or 50-minute focus, and set breaks to 5, 10 or 15 minutes or any length you like. Every fourth focus session is followed by a long break: 15 minutes, or 30 minutes with 50-minute focus.

Does it keep running in another tab?

Yes. Time keeps running while you use other tabs or apps, a chime sounds when each period ends, and it counts the focus sessions you finished today.
