How to run a fair random draw and split teams

Giveaways, presentation order, forfeits and team splits all need a random pick. What matters most is that everyone accepts the result as fair. Here is how the common methods compare and how to run a draw people trust.

Draw methods compared

Keeping it fair

  1. Announce the rules first: say how many win and how (“the first three to finish win”, “last place does the forfeit”).
  2. Have everyone check the list of names before starting, so nobody is missing or entered twice.
  3. Run it once. Re-running because you dislike the result destroys trust; if you want several rounds, agree on “best of three” in advance.
  4. Keep a record. A screen recording or result image lets you show the outcome later if anyone asks.

Splitting teams fairly

A fully random split can stack strong players or friends on one side. When skill matters, group people of similar skill first and randomize within each group. For simple groups, put everyone in a random order and deal them into Team 1, Team 2, Team 3 and so on, which keeps team sizes even.

Using the AlphaPick pinball picker

AlphaPick mixes the marbles with the browser’s cryptographic random generator before they drop, then lets physics decide, so nobody can fix the result in advance. Choose first place, last place, the Nth finisher, the first N to finish or team splitting, then record the race as a video or save a result card with the full finishing order as proof. Names you enter never leave your browser.
